Nohemi lives with her mother and 2 siblings. Her mother is very supportive and does everything possible to help Nohemi and her siblings, including getting up at 3 a.m. for work and coming home again at 8 p.m. Part of Nohemi’s dream is to be able to support her mother just as her mother has supported her.

“I want to study nursing. I can support my community by studying my career because I believe that with this I can, and we can, help achieve a better quality of life. I have many ideas and dreams for supporting my community in the future.”

Letter from Nohemi Avellaneda Hurtado

My name is Nohemi Avellaneda Hurtado. I live in Ollantaytambo. My parents are named Felicitas Hurtado and Olivera Pio Avellaneda Mejia. I have two siblings: one boy and one girl, so together we are three. I want to study to become a professional in order to be able to pay for my sister’s education and the educations of many other people who do not have the necessary money. In this way, they can also help more and more people where we live.

The program that I chose is nursing because I want to help the many people who need me to devote my full time to them. Many people study without having direction. I aim to be one of the best nurses and learn more from all of my mistakes.

I am 18 years old. My mom always works for us. She has to wake up at 3 a.m. to be able to go to her job until 8 p.m. She works cleaning bathrooms. I help her almost every morning until I have to go back home to cook for my sister who is going to high school. My father does not live in my house. My parents separated because my father drinks a lot. He is an alcoholic. He does not do anything to help us. My mother also works to be able to buy medication for my brother. He suffers from a heart problem and has epilepsy.

I thank you for everything that you are doing for me. I give you thanks and may God bless your whole family.
