Lawrence Ssemwanga is an 18 year old boy studying at Light High School Seguku. He is a catholic and a Muganda by tribe. He enjoys playing football, reading novels, swimming, listening to music and visiting friends.
His short term goals include playing football and being at home all the time with his parents. He has long term goals also, which include finishing his education, having a family and having his residence and land.
He believes he is a strong leader and prides himself in being socially responsible and committed to serve his people. During the holidays last year, he promoted good sanitation by cleaning community water channels every week. This is just one way he has been committed to community action.
He has the hopes of becoming a veterinary doctor, a social entrepreneur and to have a successful life.
About this scholarship
This scholarship is for a social change program called Educate! Socially Responsible Leadership Course which was created by our partner Educate!.
Educate! has created a new model of education that channels the untapped potential of youth in Africa to become part of the solution. The curriculum is focused on the skills and experience students need to find solutions to problems in their communities. The teachers are mentors who build powerful relationships that give youth confidence to lead change. And the classroom is the community itself where the Educate! students start initiatives that solve the problems of poverty, disease, violence and environmental degradation.
Today, Educate! is working with 415 high-school aged youth across Uganda, and developing a model of education that can be applied across Africa.
