Piratheepan is studying an Arts degree at the Eastern University in Sri Lanka. He wants to become a teacher. He is the oldest of 4 children 2 boys and 2 girls. They are very poor. His father was bitten by a snake and is no longer able to work and his mother earns $4 a day. Piratheepan would like to help his younger siblings complete their education.
Piratheepan started University in Sept 2008 and this scholarship will cover her second year of of University!
We are happy to report that all our scholars in Sri Lanka are alive and well despite the terrible violence in that country. For several months we lost touch with one of our female students who is studying law at Jaffna - her parents had gone to see if she was safe and were there when the war intensified and they too dissappeared. Our Sri lanka office was very worried for their safety, however, eventually they were able to make contact again. All the universities are open and classes are continuing.
