Ramachandran is studying Science at Eastern University. He is the oldest of 5 children. In 1990 their house was destroyed during the civil war. The family was housed in a refugee camp where they lived for several years. They are now living in a relative’s house. The father works as a laborer. Ramachandran is anxious to be able to help his family escape from poverty.
Ramachandran started University in Sept 2008 and this scholarship will cover his second year of of University!
We are happy to report that all our scholars in Sri Lanka are alive and well despite the terrible violence in that country. For several months we lost touch with one of our female students who is studying law at Jaffna - her parents had gone to see if she was safe and were there when the war intensified and they too dissappeared. Our Sri lanka office was very worried for their safety, however, eventually they were able to make contact again. All the universities are open and classes are continuing.
