Ariyaretnam is studying Mathematics and Physical Science at South Eastern University in Sri Lanka and he would like to become a teacher. His family has no disposable income. He has a younger brother and his mother is a widow. His mother had received a micro-credit loan from Rose Charities and is raising chickens to make a small living. She cannot possibly cover the costs of her son’s university.
Ariyaretnam started University in Sept 2008 and this scholarship will cover his second year of of University!
We are happy to report that all our scholars in Sri Lanka are alive and well despite the terrible violence in that country. For several months we lost touch with one of our female students who is studying law at Jaffna - her parents had gone to see if she was safe and were there when the war intensified and they too dissappeared. Our Sri lanka office was very worried for their safety, however, eventually they were able to make contact again. All the universities are open and classes are continuing.
