Michael Oumo (the prof)
Michael is currently 19 years old, he left behind his two brothers and two sisters and moved to Ukwala, to attend high school. He lives with his aunt's relative as both of his parents have passed away. His favourite subject is chemistry and likes to learn about chemical reactions and substances and their behaviour with the atmosphere. After school Michael would like to be a university professor as he loves to teach and give lectures. At school he plays football, is an anti- AIDs club member, and helps maintains the village roads and paths. He would like to see his community put more emphasis on woman groups and education.
About the School
Humwend Secondary School is a community-run school situated in Ukwala. Here, 57 per cent of the population lives below the poverty line, and 24 per cent lives with the highly stigmatized human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Fifty students attend the school, 95 per cent of which are partial or complete orphans.
The cost of operating Humwend Secondary School for an entire year is approximately $21,000 USD. Unlike primary education in Kenya, the cost of tuition in secondary school is significantly higher and makes up the majority of the extra school fees.
