Sathiyavani is studying engineering at the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka. She has 2 brothers and a sister. Her father is a laborer. He elder brother left school to work as a laborer to assist with the family income. The other two children are still at school. The family is extremely poor and cannot meet the costs of sending their daughter to University.
Sathiyavani is a very talented student and she needs assistance to continue her studies. Then she will be able to assist her younger siblings to finish their education and allow her older brother to go back to school and finish his education too.
We are happy to report that all our scholars in Sri Lanka are alive and well despite the terrible violence in that country. For several months we lost touch with one of our female students who is studying law at Jaffna - her parents had gone to see if she was safe and were there when the war intensified and they too dissappeared. Our Sri lanka office was very worried for their safety, however, eventually they were able to make contact again. All the universities are open and classes are continuing.

Sathiyavani has completed her fourth year of Engineering in good standing, and is therefore eligible for a new scholarship that will cover her fifth year of University!
It is important to note that we have learned that Engineering Studies in Sri Lanka are actually 5 years long, as opposed to 3 years as initially thought. Therefore, since Sathiyavani had started her studies in 2005, her expected graduation date is in 2010 and she still has 1 more year to complete her degree.

I passed all of my courses with good grades and in the future I like to become an Engineer. That is why I am studying hard now.
I am living in the University hostel Of Peredeniya. In the morning I eat in the Canteen and all of my other meals I eat outside of the hostel. I am really good friends with Senior students at my University and I am happy to have close friends like family.
My family lives in Karaitivu, in the district of Ampara and I visit home once in a month. My family is very poor. They dream that I will be happy after my University and that makes them very happy!
