Arumainayagam is studying Engineering at the University of Peradeniya in Sri Lanka. He started in September 2006 and has successfully completed three years of his studies. Engineering studies are 5 years long in Sri Lanka, therefore Arumainayagam has 2 more years to complete his degree.
He writes, ”My father is a fish seller and my mother is a house wife. I have a brother and a sister. My family is very poor family and like many was very badly affected by the tsunamis. If you help for me I will become professional engineer in our area. If I become a professional engineer I will help the poor children affected in my area.
I am happy to report that all our scholars in Sri Lanka are alive and well despite the terrible violence in that country. For several months we lost touch with one of our female students who is studying law at Jaffna - her parents had gone to see if she was safe and were there when the war intensified and they too dissappeared. Our Sri lanka office was very worried for their safety, however, eventually they were able to make contact again. All the universities are open and classes are continuing.

Arumainayagam has completed his third year of Engineering in good standing, and is therefore eligible for a new scholarship that will cover his fourth year of University!
It is important to note that we have learned that Engineering Studies in Sri Lanka are actually 5 years long, as opposed to 3 years as initially thought. Therefore, since Arumainayagam had started his studies in 2006, his expected graduation date is in 2011 and he still has 2 more years to complete his degree.

I have completed the 1st & 2nd degree this year with credit pass and I am in the 3rd year right now. In the future, I would like to become an Engineer as I'm a young and I want to do well in this field.
I am living in the hostel with a lot of my friends and we cook, eat and study together. Our morning breakfasts are usually in the Canteen of the university and all of the other meals we are making together as a group. We have fun and senior and junior students are very good with each other. We are like a family at school.
My family is living in Karaitivu and they are well. They are happy when I come home to visit, but I only visit my home for vacation. Our monthly income is not enough to continue our higher studies so I am very thankful to have the scholarship!
