Brian dreams about being a pilot and also wants to, he says, "contribute to the movement of eradicating poverty in my society." He is 17 years old and currently attends Humwend Secondary School. His favorite subjects are math and science because "I love the challenge of working with reason." He is highly involved in his school, mostly in the journalism club. He is also working to develop an irrigation system that would work in times of drought and has been discussing with his peers how they can help those in need. He is an orphan, now living with his grandfather, brother and sister. He plays an important role at home, looking after cattle and some of the family crops.
The School
Humwend Secondary School is a community-run school situated in Ukwala, Kenya. Here 57 per cent of the population lives below the poverty line, and 24 per cent lives with the highly stigmatized human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Fifty students attend the school, 95 per cent of which are partial or complete orphans.
The cost of operating Humwend Secondary School for an entire year is approximately $21,000 USD. Although public education is subsidized by the Kenyan government, there are still mandatory costs (such as tuition, examinations and uniforms) which are preventing students from attending school. SEED scholarships currently do not provide all the funds necessary for a student to go to school, we hope that with your support we are able to secure resources for Brian to attend school in the upcoming school year. Many Thanks for your support.
