Sujitha's family home was destroyed in the 2004 tsunami and she and her mother had to move in with relatives. Their annual income is $2400 rupees ( $240).
University is free in Sri Lanka but Sujitha's family cannot afford the extra expenses of books, food transport and accommodation.
Despite being a talented student prepared to persue the difficult courseload of the physical sciences, unless she receives this much needed support from the Education Generation community she will have to leave her university place, as many deserving students in Sri Lanka are forced to do.
I am happy to report that all our scholars in Sri Lanka are alive and well despite the terrible violence in that country. For several months we lost touch with one of our female students who is studying law at Jaffna - her parents had gone to see if she was safe and were there when the war intensified and they too dissappeared. Our Sri lanka office was very worried for their safety, however, eventually they were able to make contact again. All the universities are open and classes are continuing.

Sujitha is nearing completion of her year in good standing, and is therefore eligible for a new scholarship that will cover her next year of university!

Hello,
Currently, I am doing well in my studying. I passed all of my classes thus far and after graduation I would like to become a good teacher as I love helping people and I like that profession very much.
I live with my family in Navithanveli and I have to travel daily from my home to the university, because there is no hostel facility for females at my university.
Thank you, I am very happy I can study in University.
