Parmini has a younger brother and sister at school. Her mother is a widow who earns just $200 a year. Their house was destroyed in the tsunami and their father was killed. Despite these hardships Pamini has studied hard and was offered a place at university.
Her mother cannot afford to buy the books or pay the extra costs for transport, food and accommodation. Pamini was awarded a scholarship in 2007 which allowed her to complete her first year, and completed a second year with the support of the Education Generation community in 2008.
She knows how many sacrifices her family made to send her to university so she studied hard and passed all her courses with good marks. Pamini wants to graduate and find a good job so that she can help her mother and pay for the education of her younger brother and sister.
I am happy to report that all our scholars in Sri Lanka are alive and well despite the terrible violence in that country. For several months we lost touch with one of our female students who is studying law at Jaffna - her parents had gone to see if she was safe and were there when the war intensified and they too dissappeared. Our Sri lanka office was very worried for their safety, however, eventually they were able to make contact again. All the universities are open and classes are continuing.

Hello,
I am living in the hostel of Eastern University. The subjects are very interesting and I like History subject very much. I have high performance in my classes. I have breakfast in the canteen of the university and for other meals, my friends and I get together and cook. Senior students are good with me and treat me as their sister.
I miss my family in University, but it is good that they are well. After graduation, I like to become a teacher because I am a female and this profession is a good fit for me.
Thank you.
