Shanmuganathan’s family home was destroyed in the 2004 tsunami. He, his parents and three sisters have been living in a one room hut in a camp with 200 families ever since. His family income is 10,000 rupees (or approx US$100) per year. Despite the difficulties of studying in such crowded conditions he passed his final high school exams with straight “A’s” and was awarded a place at the University of Peradeniya to study Arts. There are no fees for universities in Sri Lanka but the student must meet expenses for text books, residence, food and transport. These expenses are well beyond the means of his family.
Shamuganathan was awarded a Rose Charities scholarship in 2006 and has completed the first year of a three year program, passing all subjects with good grades. He had also completed his second year in good standing and now he needs $260 to complete his third year. He wants to graduate and help pay for the education of his younger brothers and sisters.
I am happy to report that all our scholars in Sri Lanka are alive and well despite the terrible violence in that country. For several months we lost touch with one of our female students who is studying law at Jaffna - her parents had gone to see if she was safe and were there when the war intensified and they too dissappeared. Our Sri lanka office was very worried for their safety, however, eventually they were able to make contact again. All the universities are open and classes are continuing.

Hello,
I have completed the first year of my degree by passing all subjects with good grades. Currently, I am in my second year of an Arts program and I am doing well in my classes. Besides my normal classes I am doing an IT Course in a private institution during the weekends and holidays. I like this course very much even though I am studying Arts. I also like Geography subject very much.
During my time in University, I am staying in the hostel with all groups of students, Sinhala, Muslims and Tamils. We are living as brothers and they are very good with me. I don’t see any discrimination. I have food in the hostel and as my University is far away from my home I come home only during my vacation. During my vacation, I am happy see my family.
After graduation, I would like to become a teacher. I chose to be a teacher because I want to serve children in my area. I am thanking for helping me to continue my higher studies.
Thank you!
