Mohamed Aniffa Muthazar lives in the village of Pottuvil near Kalmunai Sri Lanka. His family is part of the small muslim community in a predominantly hindu area.
His village was extensively damaged by the tsunami in 2004 and Aniffa's family home and business was destroyed. His father has been unable to rebuild and the family live on a subsistence income.
Aniffa has been offered a place to study commerce, a monumental achievement for someone from his village, and his dream is to get his family back on their feet. There are no university fees in Sri Lanka but the student must pay for books, accommodation, meals and other expenses. These are way beyond his family's means.
We are happy to report that all our scholars in Sri Lanka are alive and well despite the terrible violence in that country. For several months we lost touch with one of our female students who is studying law at Jaffna - her parents had gone to see if she was safe and were there when the war intensified and they too dissappeared. Our Sri lanka office was very worried for their safety, however, eventually they were able to make contact again. All the universities are open and classes are continuing.
